How QR event tickets work

Short version: every ticket is a unique code, delivered to the buyer, scanned once at the gate. Here is the full mechanics, and why it stops duplicate tickets.

UNITIC is a Nigerian event ticketing platform that helps organizers create events, sell digital tickets with guest checkout, deliver tickets to attendees by email, and verify tickets at the gate with unique scan-once QR codes — then withdraw ticket money to a Nigerian bank account.

Each ticket gets a unique QR code

A QR code is just a machine-readable pattern — but what matters is what it encodes. On UNITIC, every ticket you sell is assigned a unique QR code tied to that specific ticket, that specific buyer, and that specific event. No two tickets share a code.

The buyer receives their QR ticket by email right after payment. On the day, they show it on their phone (or a printed copy) at the gate.

The scan-once rule

When the gate team scans a QR, UNITIC records that ticket as checked in. The record has two jobs:

This is the piece that paper lists and screenshots cannot give you: only the first person to present a given ticket gets in.

Who scans, and with what

Scanners run on ordinary phones. The organizer creates a scanner link for each gate or entry point, and multiple team members can check guests in at the same time. Every scan updates the same event, so headcount and gate activity are visible live on the organizer dashboard.

QR tickets versus paper tickets

Paper tickets can be photocopied. QR tickets can also be screenshotted — which is exactly why the scan-once rule matters. It makes reproduction worthless: even if a person forwards their QR, only the first scan works. Compare the full trade-offs on online tickets vs paper tickets.
