The problem with WhatsApp for ticket sales

WhatsApp is a messaging app. It works well for conversation. It does not work well for:

• Tracking who has paid. Organizers end up screenshotting bank alerts, copying names into notes or spreadsheets, and manually reconciling payments at the gate.
• Controlling entry. A WhatsApp message or screenshot can be forwarded to anyone. There is no unique, single-use proof of purchase.
• Accounting for money. Without a single checkout page, organizers often rely on bank alerts sent into a group chat — which is easy to fake, easy to lose track of, and hard to audit.

What replaces it

A proper ticketing setup means three things:

1. Online checkout. Buyers pay the displayed ticket price through a payment page (UNITIC uses Flutterwave for card, USSD, and bank transfer). No manual confirmation needed.
2. Unique, single-use QR tickets. Every buyer gets a QR code that is unique to their purchase. Each code can only be scanned once at the gate.
3. Bank payouts. The organizer withdraws the collected funds to a Nigerian bank account — no reconciliation from WhatsApp alerts or payment screenshots.

The gate entry problem

The biggest failure point with WhatsApp-based sales is the gate. When entry depends on WhatsApp alerts or screenshots, you get:

• People showing the same screenshot to multiple gate attendants.
• Fake payment alerts that look real in a group chat.
• Manual name lists that slow down entry and create arguments.
